Central England Co-op has officially opened its new store in Doncaster creating 14 new jobs and investing over £1.2 million in the local community.

The Society today officially opened its new store in High Street, Barnby Dun, offering the local community food and essentials on their doorstep.

The store is on the site of the former Star Inn public house in the village and includes a customer car park with electric car charging points, a full range of products, a free water refill station, phone charging area, free cash machine and customer toilet.

It features a specially created piece of artwork by children at nearby Barnby Dun Primary Academy thanking key workers for their vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic which features on the outside of the store, so the children can see their work every time they visit.

Central England Co-op thanked the school for the artwork by making a donation of £500 to the school’s ‘Books for Schools’ project to enable them to buy new books for pupils.

Claire Robinson, head teacher at Barnby Dun Primary School, said: “We were delighted to be asked by Central England Co-op to provide a special piece of artwork to be displayed on their new store in Barnby Dun. The children have had a great time completing the project and can’t wait to see the finished design.

“We are extremely grateful for their kind donation to our fundraising project to refurbish and re-stock our school library.”

A food bank collection point has also been installed to support the great work of Doncaster Food Bank as it continues to manage the increased demand caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.

To mark the launch, store manager Neil Holmes made a special donation of essential food and essentials to the food bank.

Neil said: “It is great to finally open our doors to the local community as the team have been desperate to support our neighbours and ensure they can access food and essentials during the pandemic.

“All of us here at the new store are proud to be part of such a great community in Barnby Dun so we are delighted to be able to support Doncaster Food Bank which is offering a lifeline to vulnerable residents and people struggling in these testing times.

“I would like to thank the children at Barnby Dun Primary Academy for the fantastic artwork they have created for our launch which we are so proud to have on the store paying tribute to all key workers.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank local residents for their patience. It has been long-awaited, but hopefully everyone will enjoy the store as much as we do.”

In line with the latest Government guidance, the store has a range of social distancing measures in place which customers will be asked to adhere to, as well as other measures designed to keep everyone safe such as checkout screens and gloves, visors and hand sanitiser for colleagues.

The Barnby Dun Co-operative food store is open from 7am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday.

The store offers a wide range of products from everyday necessities to something a little more special.

This includes fresh fruit and vegetables, an in-store bakery offering breads and pastries, chilled beers and wines, fresh and frozen product, Irresistible product ranges, as well as a great selection of food to go.

It also offers Lottery, Paypoint and Collect Plus, as well as a Costa Coffee machine and an instant hot water tap so customers can enjoy a herbal tea, customer seating inside and out and a lifesaving defibrillator has also been installed.

Central England Co-op is currently offering a 10% discount for all NHS workers to say thank you for their efforts working on the frontline to help tackle the Coronavirus.

All NHS workers visiting the new store in High Street have to do is show their ID card to receive 10% off all food and other essentials and to get priority access by moving to the front of any external queue when waiting to enter.
