Westfield threatens legal action over rent arrears

Hugo Boss, toy retailer The Entertainer and food chain Pret a Manger are thought to be among those involved in the dispute.

The Entertainer received a letter on 5 November – the first day of the latest coronavirus lockdown in England – demanding full payment of rent within a week, The Financial Times reports. The letter was withdrawn after the retailer’s owner, Gary Grant, appealed to his MP.

Scott Parsons, regional managing director for Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, told Drapers: “Although we don’t comment on dealings with individual tenants, our firm strategy is to work in partnership with our retailers. Only in situations where a retailer has refused to collaborate in pursuit of an agreement that could work for both parties would we consider legal action.

“For those who are genuinely working with us, we are having productive discussions to reach a fair and positive outcome for all, especially smaller and local operators who are most in need of help.”
